Zero Order Waveplates are constructed from two birefringent crystal plates with crossed optical axes, where the precise λ/2 or λ/4 retardance is achieved through a controlled thickness difference between the plates. The two plates have an overall thickness of 1.6 mm. Due to this construction, zero order waveplates exhibit reduced sensitivity to wavelength and temperature variations, making them particularly well-suited for single-line or moderate-bandwidth applications where exact polarization control is critical.
Zero Order Waveplates are available in either cementless optical contact or air-gap configurations, with the air-spaced version offering enhanced resistance to laser-induced damage, particularly in high-power UV laser applications.
We manufacture zero order waveplates from crystalline quartz and from magnesium fluoride (MgF₂). Quartz waveplates can be used for most applications and they are supplied with antireflection coatings. MgF₂ waveplates by contrast, are mainly used in the mid-infrared spectral region where quartz is not transparent. In addition, MgF₂ does not exhibit optical activity, making it the material of choice for applications requiring the highest polarization purity. MgF₂ waveplates are supplied without antireflection coating.
Zero order waveplates are available with λ/2 or λ/4 retardation for a comprehensive selection of standard wavelengths, ensuring cost-effective pricing. We also manufacture custom zero order waveplates tailored to non-standard wavelengths, offering competitive pricing. This flexibility allows customers to access high-performance zero order waveplates that meet both common and unique spectral requirements, all while maintaining the exceptional accuracy and stability.
In addition to our standard stock we also offer custom accessories and tailored versions, as outlined in the product details section. All waveplates are housed in durable cylindrical mounts for easy integration and handling, but unmounted optical contact versions are also available as a custom option. All waveplate mounts can also be ordered customized with SM1 or SM2 outer threading.
